FAQ - Paroá Amazon Lodge

Full FAQ for Paroá Amazon Lodge, covering everything from jungle tours to accommodation and transportation.

Planning Your Trip

Paroá Amazon Lodge is a newly built jungle lodge located on the riverbank of Lago do Paroá, in a quiet and unspoiled area of the Amazon near the Manacapuru River. The lodge is only accessible by boat, with no roads, neighbors, or nearby tourism infrastructure.
Hidden in the rainforest, the lodge is surrounded by dense jungle, offering an immersive and authentic experience close to nature. It features rustic comfort in private bungalows, a restaurant, a bar, and a peaceful atmosphere far from the modern world.

Paroá Amazon Lodge is located in the central Amazon region of Brazil, on the banks of Lago do Paroá near the Manacapuru River.
All guests must travel to Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, to reach the lodge. From there, the journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours by car and boat.

📍 View on Google Maps

The easiest and most common way to reach Manaus is by air. There are frequent domestic flights from major Brazilian cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and Fortaleza. Some international flights also arrive directly, including routes from Lisbon (TAP Air Portugal), Bogotá, and Panama.

Manaus is a remote city with no road access to the rest of Brazil, except via Venezuela. Travel by boat from Belém is technically possible, but takes several days and is rarely practical for short-term visitors.

For updated flight schedules and airport services, visit the official airport website:

The Amazon is a year-round destination, and the experience changes dramatically with the seasons.

  • March to July: Water levels are rising, reaching their peak in early July. This is the best time for exploring the flooded forest by boat or canoe.

  • August to November: Water levels drop steadily, reaching their lowest point in early November. Sandy river beaches appear, and some areas become more accessible on foot.

  • September and October are typically the hottest and driest months, with intense sun and little rain.

  • Rain is most common between February and April, but this period often brings a more pleasant climate – warm, with softer air and less oppressive heat.

There is up to a 13-meter difference between high and low water, offering two very different Amazon experiences.

Temperatures normally range from 26°C to 34°C (79–93°F) throughout the year.

All jungle programs include a bilingual guide who speaks Portuguese and English or Portuguese and Spanish. In most cases, we can also provide guides who speak French, German, or Italian – depending on availability.

You can select your preferred language directly in the booking form, and we’ll do our best to match your request.

There are no vaccine requirements to visit Paroá Amazon Lodge, but we recommend that you follow the advice of your local travel clinic or health authorities.

Most visitors do not take malaria medication, as the risk in our area is considered very low. That said, the decision is personal and should be made with guidance from a medical professional.

Common recommendations include:

  • Yellow fever vaccination (recommended for travel in the Amazon region)

  • Tetanus and Hepatitis A (often part of general travel vaccines)

  • Mosquito protection is more important than medication: use repellent, wear long sleeves and pants during jungle walks, and sleep in screened rooms

Our rooms have window screens, and we do not use mosquito nets over the beds, as they are generally not necessary.

We recommend packing light, comfortable clothing suitable for warm, humid weather – and activities both on land and on water.

Essentials:

  • Light long-sleeved shirts and trousers (for jungle walks and mosquito protection)

  • T-shirts, shorts, and swimwear

  • Closed walking shoes (required for jungle hikes – light hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers)

  • Rain jacket or poncho

  • Flashlight or headlamp

  • Sun protection: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses

  • Mosquito repellent

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Personal toiletries and any medications you may need

Optional:

  • Sandals or flip-flops (for use at the lodge or in the boat)

  • Dry bags or ziplock bags for electronics

  • Binoculars and camera

  • Light sweater or jacket (early mornings can be fresh)

We provide bed linen and towels, so you don’t need to bring your own.

➡️ See the next question for important details about the Optional Meeting of the Waters tour.

This excursion is optional and can be added to your jungle package. It includes the famous Meeting of the Waters, swimming with pink dolphins, lunch at a floating restaurant, seeing the giant water lilies, and a visit to the enormous Samauma (Kapok) tree.

Whether this takes place on your way to the lodge or on the return depends on your pickup time in Manaus:

  • If you are picked up before 11:00, the excursion will take place on the way to the lodge.
Total travel time that day will be approx. 5 hours, including several stops.
  • If you are picked up after 11:00, your transfer will go directly to the lodge (2 to 2.5 hours), and the excursion will instead be done on your return day.

The excursion must be completed during daylight hours, so please make sure your travel plans allow for:

  • Arrival in Manaus before 11:00 on the first day, or
  • Departure from the lodge in the morning, with a late afternoon or evening flight out of Manaus on your final day.

To include this excursion, tick “Meeting of the Waters tour” in the booking form.

Yes. All jungle packages follow a recommended program, but once you arrive at the lodge, you are free to swap activities or adjust the plan with your guide.

If you have a special interest – such as photography, birdwatching, or fishing – let us know and we’ll do our best to make it happen. Some custom tours may require additional boat transport or other resources, and a small fee may apply.

No – tipping is not expected and never required. But if you feel that our team has provided exceptional service, a small tip is always welcome and appreciated.

Our staff – including guides, boat crew, kitchen and cleaning team – do their best to offer you a memorable jungle experience.

You may choose to give a tip directly to your guide, or leave a general tip at the reception before departure – but this is entirely optional and up to you.

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. While we cannot guarantee specific sightings, many guests enjoy observing:

  • Pink river dolphins

  • Sloths, especially during boat tours

  • Monkeys, often in the early morning or late afternoon

  • Macaws, toucans, and other colorful birds

  • Caimans, especially at night

  • Butterflies, frogs, insects, and many other small jungle creatures

With a bit of luck and quiet observation, you’ll likely spot many fascinating animals both on foot and by canoe.
Our guides are trained to spot wildlife and explain their behavior and natural habitat.

Some less commonly seen animals include:

  • Howler monkeys

  • Giant river otters

  • Anacondas and boa constrictors

  • Armadillos

  • Tapirs

  • Capybaras

  • Harpy eagles and owls

  • Hoatzins (a prehistoric-looking bird)

  • Ocelots and other small wild cats

  • Jaguars (onça pintada) – sometimes seen, especially near the river

Sightings vary greatly depending on water levels, weather, and time of day – and the quieter you are, the more you may see.

We recommend that each guest brings one suitcase or backpack, plus a small daypack if needed. Transport to the lodge involves boat travel, and storage space is limited — especially when several guests are traveling the same day.

If you’re carrying more luggage, you can usually store bags at your hotel in Manaus (most central hotels offer this service).
If needed, we may also assist with luggage storage in Manaus – just let us know in advance.

Yes. A visit to an indigenous riverside tribe is included in your jungle package. During this cultural exchange, you’ll witness a short ritual dance and learn about the community’s traditions, sustainable lifestyle, and relationship with the forest.

For guests with a special interest in indigenous spirituality, it may be possible to take part in a more complete ceremony and even stay overnight in the tribe. This is not included in the regular program and cannot be booked in advance – it must be arranged directly with your guide during your stay, and only if conditions allow.
